Seventeen-year-old Karel wishes something, anything would come along to shake up his dull bourgeois existence, even war. Soon his wish will be granted. As Hitler launches an invasion of the Netherlands, Karel is almost killed in an air raid and falls in love for the first time, with the daughter of his uncle’s Jewish mistress. But the bliss this passion brings is short lived, as the girl and her mother are forced to flee for their lives before the Nazi advance.
